Terracotta pots are harder to keep moist as the clay dries out very quickly.

So if you live in a very hot area this may not be the best choice.

Large garden pots mean more space for growing, even buckets make good vegetable containers.

Growing vegetables in your garden can save you money.

During harvest time, your own produce becomes part of your meals.

Home gardeners feel deep satisfaction in preparing salad or seasoning the casserole with freshly picked plants from their own vegetable gardens.

Their feeling of the taste is incomparable. Fresh surplus are distributed to friends and love ones while some are keep frozen.

There are vegetables, however, that are bred specifically for small-space gardening.

Patio tomatoes, bush squash and beans, miniature cucumbers, even pumpkins and watermelons have been developed to grow in compact form, just perfect for container gardens.

Ask at your local nursery for the miniature and bush varieties, both as seeds and as plant starts.

Even vining vegetables such as cucumbers can be grown in containers provided trellises are used to train the plants up instead of out.

Fruit grown in such a manner is cleaner than fruit that is in contact with the ground and is less likely to bruise.

Root crops such as potatoes and carrots can be grown in large pots that give them room to develop.

Just make sure that you can move the pots if necessary and that you do not stack so many pots on a balcony or other structure that you cause it to fail.

The list of vegetables that you can successfully grow in containers is endless. I said earlier tomatoes can be grown in hanging baskets, one plant per basket, try Tumbling Tom or Balconi Yellow.

Grow standard tomato plants in pots or grow bags — Bloody Butcher is an excellent tasting, heirloom tomato.

One plant per pot or two plants in a grow bag with a cane stick for support.

Cultivating vegetables at home in containers has become increasingly popular over the past few years, especially with home gardeners who may limited by the amount of ground available and not have the space for a vegetable plot.

It is also an ideal way for the elderly or infirm to carry on gardening without having to worry about getting down to ground level.

It’s also a great way to introduce children to the joys of learning how to grow vegetables.
